IRS Tax Debt Relief Programs
The IRS understands that tax debt can be overwhelming, and it offers several programs designed to help you find a workable solution. If you have unfiled tax returns, passport revocation, levy, liens or garnishment due to unpaid tax debts then you may qualify for one of these programs:
Payment Plans (Installment Agreements)
If you can’t pay your entire tax debt at once, you can arrange a manageable monthly payment plan. The IRS offers both short-term plans (for smaller balances) and long-term installment agreements that allow you to pay over several years. This gives you breathing room while you gradually satisfy your obligation.
Offer in Compromise (OIC)
If you’re unable to pay your full tax debt, you may be eligible to settle for less than you owe. The IRS will consider your financial situation, income, and expenses to determine if a reduced settlement is reasonable and fair. This program acknowledges that life circumstances matter.
Currently Not Collectible (CNC) Status
The IRS recognizes economic hardship and offers relief options for those facing serious financial difficulty. This may include temporary suspension of certain collection actions or flexibility in payment arrangements. During periods of genuine financial hardship—such as job loss, medical emergency, or other unexpected challenges—you can request that the IRS temporarily pause collection efforts while you stabilize your situation. Interest and penalties continue to accrue, but collection activity stops, giving you time to recover.
Innocent Spouse Relief
If your spouse (or former spouse) failed to report income or claimed improper deductions on a joint return and you had no knowledge of it, you may qualify for relief from the resulting tax debt. This program protects spouses from bearing responsibility for tax fraud or negligence they didn’t participate in.
